16 people including Gregory “Joey” Johnson, who burned the flag outside the Republican Convention in July and are facing prosecution, say they will be converging in Cleveland on Thursday September 29, for a “People’s Tribunal” to put the system on trial.
In a statement, the RNC 16 said that they will conduct a mock trial outside the Cuyahoga County Justice Center, putting on trial the very police agencies — including the Secret Service, the FBI, the Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams, and Cleveland Prosecutor Timothy McGinty — and Alex Jones’ right wing website Infowars, who conspired to suppress Joey Johnson and the Revolution Club’s protest outside the Republican National Convention by attacking and arresting Johnson and 15 other people for burning the American flag, even though Johnson was the named defendant in the U.S. Supreme Court case, Texas v Johnson that held that burning the flag in protest is political speech protected by the First Amendment.
Joey Johnson stated, “In this ‘People’s Tribunal’ mock trial, these pig agencies will be placed in a pig pen and called up to testify one by one. They will be prosecuted using their own words and actions. If all they can do is oink, a pig Latin translator will be provided. We are putting them on trial for violating their own laws, undermining Texas v. Johnson, in order to politically suppress and repress the RNC 16 because of our righteous message, and thereby having a ‘chilling effect’ on people’s freedom to express themselves by burning the flag.”
Johnson will give the closing argument in the People’s Tribunal. Johnson said recently, “I am so proud of Colin Kaepernick for refusing to stand for the national anthem. This is not merely because I respect his right to freedom of speech, though this is important. I feel this way because I absolutely hate the American flag, the national anthem, and everything they stand for. In fact, I hate these imperialist symbols of brainwash and plunder so much, I am currently facing charges, along with 15 others, for burning the American flag at both national political conventions just a few weeks ago.”
Johnson stated that he will also announce his intentions to file a civil suit against the Department of Homeland Security, the Secret Service, the FBI, the City of Cleveland and the Cleveland Police Department, and Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty for damages related to unlawful arrest and assault pursuant to unlawful arrests. Johnson said that he also intends to file for injunctive relief for the “chilling affect” that the police assault, arrests and prosecution of himself and the RNC16 has had on others who may want to burn the flag in protest.
Joey Johnson is available for interviews.
